kittymachine Low Res (1)This irreverent new post-art critical piece reconstitutes communist playwright Heiner Müller’s post-modern rewrite of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Die Hamletmaschine (1977), as a pseudo-post-modern rewrite of Cats: The Musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber (1980). While Die Hamletmaschine uses the lens of one of the most prominent European theatrical works that came before it to critically examine East German political culture, Kittymachine uses the lens of one of the most prominent European theatrical works published after Die Hamletmaschine to critically examine the void left behind by post-modernism, the consumerist-capitalist culture of the West End and Broadway that created Cats: The Musical, and the integrity of art itself.
