Black Magic is a play written by a group of Black students at Harvard College. It is a story about the way this place changes us, and the way we change this place. The play follows several characters, all black students at Harvard, through their personal journeys during their time here—through race, through sexuality, through gender—as they grapple with how to hold all of these in one body—and how to move that body through a world in which racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia are a constant presence.

This play is about relationships, this play is about love: How do we hold each other in the midst of all this? It is about how it feels to be black on campus in this time: How does the news crash through our days, how do we feel it in our bodies? News of black death, of black bodies falling, breaking, hanging; of black bodies marching, rising, shouting, filling the streets in protest. How does it feel to be black in section, black in the dining hall, black in America, when these things happen? What does it feel like to come of age amidst this uprising? As we see our friends sitting in, occupying presidents’ offices and administration buildings, making black bodies visible, demanding to be seen, heard, and safe on campuses across the nation—we write a play and ask: What does it mean for us to take over a stage?
