Race in Theater at Harvard and Beyond

The Harvard-Radcliffe Gilbert & Sullivan Players are currently halfway through their run of “The Mikado,” with five performances remaining. The production has engendered protest and conversation on campus about yellowface, censorship, appropriation, and racial issues in theater.

The HRDC Board strongly supports community discussion about race and inclusivity in theater. We were heartened by the number of people who attended our panel discussion on race in the Harvard theater community a few weeks ago, and we hope members of the HRDC community will join us at our open meeting this coming Monday the 7th at 7pm to vote on amendments to our Constitution, and particularly on the proposed diversity, inclusion, and color-conscious casting amendment.

We encourage you to read about the show and the controversy by following the links below.

The Harvard Foundation is hosting an event tomorrow evening “to reflect on the current production of The Mikado, talk about your personal experiences, or engage in a larger discussion of representation and performance.” More information here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1801328926773886/
